Two teams of intermediate students from W. Erskine Johnston Public School competed in the Ottawa area Skills Canada Cardboard Boat competition, held yesterday at the Ottawa Sportsplex.  Teams were tasked with designing and constructing boats out of cardboard boxes.  They were given limited materials, including two 8×4 panels of cardboard, 50 metres of duct tape and a can of contact cement.

The boat designed by Liam Irwin, Gordon MacDonald, Cora Vasut and Cole Hamilton held a whopping 505 pounds!

Of the 32 teams who competed, one WEJ boat won the weight category, staying afloat while holding 505 pounds.  Students on this team were Liam Irwin, Gordon MacDonald, Cole Hamilton and Cora Vasut.

Our other team designed and constructed the boat that won overall.  What put them over the top was some serious “outside the box” thinking.  The initial design was the work of team member and Grade 7 student Abhishek Kurasetti.  As they were finishing up their construction, it occurred to team member and grade 8 student Trever Hanna, that they might use the latex gloves they were using to handle contact cement to fashion paddles to propel the boat through the water.  They glued the gloves to the side of cardboard panels to create paddles.  This innovation gave them the edge over their competition.

Thinking Outside the Box!

Students from the winning team will represent Ottawa at the provincial Skills Canada competition in Waterlooon February 22nd.

A huge congratulations and thank you to Ms. Baudin, who teaches our Design and Technology program for all her hard work with the team.
